Gartner retiring Magic Quadrant for Information Access Technology?

I’ve read a post on this in the Enterprise Search LinkedIn group, and so far no comments, but I wanted to confirm this via my own research. It seems that Gartner believes that the Enterprise Search market is maturing to a three (Microsoft with FAST for SharePoint 2010, Autonomy& Endeca), but also stating that this market is vulnerable to the emerging Open Source Enterprise Search Platforms.

Market Shift: Demand for Simple Enterprise Search Prompts Change From Magic Quadrant to MarketScope
(25 June 2010 Whit Andrews) A very significant number of government and commercial enterprises now select very simple products for search projects. Thanks to their simple but sophisticated offerings, Google, Microsoft and Autonomy have come to dominate the selection choices of most organizations picking search products.

So, sometime soon when the MarketScope report is officially released we will see what Gartner has to say about the current market status.

Lynda Moulton also mentions a new report due out soon relative to adding semantic knowledge to Enterprise Search – “A soon to-be released study featuring some of noteworthy applications reveals just how much is being done in enterprises for specific business purposes.”

I look forward to reading both reports!

New Beginning…

Much has happened in the structured (SQL & RDBMS) & unstructured (ECM & WCM) and combined in Enterprise Search or sometimes called United Information Access.  I’ve been involved within these technologies for many years now – long before Google went public and Microsoft had their own search engine. I will be following up with more details in the coming months. I intend to write some original postings related to Internet Search, Intranet Search, Social Search as well as Enterprise Search. I will also re-post from other sources from time to time on related topics that I think readers may find interesting.
